The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, introduces readers to a number of misunderstandings the young Chinese American and their parents face. For example, Lena is proud to set her mother up in the guest bedroom of her home. Her mother Ying-Ying however, believes that the guest should receive accommodations in the master bedroom of the house. Do misunderstandings like these occur in all American cultures? Is it a generational issue or a cultural one? Do you have any examples of a time when you felt like your parents just didn't understand where you were coming from because they grew up in a different place and or time?
